High School - Germany

Elly’s Adventure in Germany Begins

by Elly Veazey, Greenheart Travel’s High School Exchange Student in Germany

I’ve been in Germany for almost 2 weeks, and yesterday was my first day of school! I am attending the Emil-Dörle Real Schule with my sister Jana. I was very nervous before school started because I wasn’t sure if the children there would speak English at all!

Anyways, yesterday, Jana and I biked to school and met with the principal to get settled in. He brought me to my teacher who was new there, and she showed me to the room. I sat down, and as others came in, they would ask me questions in German; some of which I knew and others of which I didn’t. To those, I would reply, “Sorry, I don’t speak German, I’m from Alaska.” Some kids were so surprised. They opened their eyes wide and whispered to each other about me, but not in a bad way. Then a girl named Lena sat next to me. Apparently, she is the best at English in my class, so during the day, she has been translating as much as she can for me.
