A Futbol Game to Remember in Argentina

by Spencer Weinberg, CCI Greenheart Travel High School Exchange Student in Argentina

CARC – Club Athletico Rosario Central. This is the name of the most amazing futbal team in the world! They are actually in the B division but the people take the sport so seriously! When Central moved down to the B division last year, people committed suicide because they couldn’t take the pain. But anyways, there are two teams in Rosario. Central and Newells. When you meet someone for the first time the 3rd question they ask you is what futbol team do you like … Whats your name? where are you from? Do you like Central or Newells?

So, the season is almost over and the last few games are very critical. The stadium gets pretty dangerous this time of year because they have crazy fans who are obsessed with Central. But my host family let me go with some friends from school because I have been dying to go. The game started at 11 but we arrived at 9:30. We sat in the section where you just pick a spot where there is room. The stadium was completely full, keep in mind they are in the B division too.

When the game started 40,000 people or more were chanting songs all in unison. Fireworks and smoke bombs were going off and we were all under a flag that circled the whole section we were in which was massive. The whole time I was frozen with the chills running down my body. I have never seen anything like it. We ended up winning the match and all the people were going nuts. Win, loose, or tie the people go nuts. They had swat teams and tons of police to secure the stadium. People literally die at these events but it was totally safe for us because we are from central and we stayed low key.

I had to post about this today because I have never experienced anything like this. This was by far the best experience I’ve had in Argentina. All the others were amazing but nothing compares to this!
