My Life Begins in the Republic of Georgia: A Photo Essay

by Kenneth Monette, Greenheart Travel Teach Abroad Participant in the Republic of Georgia

Here are some photos of my house in Surami, Georgia, wine making capital and resort city in the mountains of South Central Georgia and only a few hours from Tbilisi and the Black Sea.

Here is my house. I live with Da ta, who is 50, and works as a carpenter, his wife Erma, who is 45, and my host sister Tomuna, who is 15 and Varshsheko my host brother who is 13. Dah Ta’s mother lives upstairs. My home has a view of the mountains from the front of the house and a stream that runs behind the house.

Dah Ta makes his own wine which is really delicious. He has a wine cellar downstairs.

Here I am during a hike, drinking from one of the many mineral water wells (“iron water is good for stomach and eyes”). These wells are everywhere in the village and along the mountain roads.

My host sister Tumuna stopping to pose while we hike to the fortress.

This is my brother Varsheko(blue striped shirt) and two of their cousins.

Hiking to the fortress, a Georgian flag waves from the top.

A view from my beautiful village!   School starts Wednesday….Skiing starts in November!  More photos to come… Ken
